Rare circa 1860s CDV capturing a baseball game in progress. This an extremely early game-in-progress scene capturing all the elements particular to baseball during its infancy. The scene captures most of the playing field, including the pitcher, who is striking the classic pitching pose from the era. The batter is standing at the plate, while the catcher kneels on one knee a short distance behind him. Both the umpire and scorekeeper are prominently pictured in the foreground, standing off to the side. All of the players are uniformed, including pillbox caps, and belts. No gloves are used by any of the players, and the catcher lacks any of the protective equipment that would be standard a few decades later. Like nearly all CDV’s from this era, the players are not identified. Our only hint as to the location of the scene is that given by the photographer’s credit stamped on the reverse that reads “Augustine H. Folsom Phot./No. 2 Soren & Block Roxbury/& 113 Wash’n St./Boston.”
